INTERVIEW: THECOOLSHOESHINE -"FOOTAGE"
07.15.10

-FRANKYBANANAS talks sneakers and FOOTAGE with THECOOLSHOESHINE-
Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you do?
My name's Rainier...pronounced Ray-neer. Hmm...in short, I run a modest sized sneaker consignment shop in Orange County, Brea.
What made you open up a shop?
For years now, I've been wanting to open up a small consignment shop, but was hesitant to pull the trigger. With the birth of my daughter, about 18 months ago....it seemed even more unlikely I'd have the opportunity to open one. I mean.....any reasonable wife would balk at the idea of her husband quitting his full time job and taking on the HUGE risk of starting a business, especially when there's bills to be paid and a new-born to be raised....but fortunately for me I guess, my wife wasn't one of those reasonable ones..hahaha..she was fully supportive and has had my back through out this whole endevour.

Why the name FOOTAGE?
Honestly, the name "Footage" stems from a friend's eBay user ID (thanks Alvin!). I just really liked how it had some sort of relation to footwear (foot-age), but wasn't entirely limited to sneakers only. Know what I mean? I thought it was important for the shop to have a name that would be marketable and appealing on t-shirts, hats, jackets, etc. and wasn't JUST a name limited to sneakers only...and by the way...the shop's full name is Footage By Thecoolshoeshine..haha
What do you think about all the retro madness going on?
Hmmm....I know a lot of people are completely opposed the retroing of sneakers over and over. However, I can't say I'm unhappy about the retro sneakers, because it gives all of us an opportunity to get things we weren't able to obtain previously. It gives the newer generation of sneaker collectors who wern't even born when Jordan 1's, 2's, Air Max 1's, 90's, etc. were originally released a chance to be a part of the community as well. You look in your closet and I bet you'll find 95% (if not higher) of your sneakers are retro
What's your favorite shoe of all time?
Like most, I used to LOVE the Air Jordan III & Air Jordan IV models. But recently, the Air Jordan VI has become the top sneaker model on my list of Air Jordan favorites. Most often though, you'd probably catch me wearing some Air Max 1's, lunar runners, or some beat up Air Jordan 1's...haha...not good marketing for myself huh? I'm still in search of a size 9 Supa Dunk SB though....at a reasonable price ofcourse!
What's your method of storing shoes?
I think i'm asked this question on a daily basis. There's no real secret to my method of storage. I just keep them in a cool place w/ no humidity and try not to display em outside the box. Everyone seems to have their own methods, whether it be stuffing em w/ silica packs or even wrapping them up w/ plastic. I have NO CLUE what's the most effective way. Someone definitely needs to do a scientific study on the best methods to keep shoes from discoloring and deteriorating!

How many shoes do you have?
Another question I'm asked on a daily basis. My response always seems to disappoint though because I probably only have 15-20 pairs of sneakers. Nothing too crazy at all. Just a bunch of easily attainable Air Maxes, Lunars, and Jordans. My daughter on the other hand, has about 65+ pairs of Nikes, Adidas, and New Balance sneakers. I wanted to snap pictures and share with everybody, but it woulda taken way too much time. Plus,
I don't think too many people have interest in checking out baby sneaker collections.
What's your rarest pair?
Nothing worth mentioning...please view response to previous question...hahah
What's the most you spent on one pair?
Hmmm......interesting story actually. Back in 03-04, I met a bunch of guys in the Chatsworth area selling a bunch of Supreme Dunk Lows. I had no clue where they were getting em from until one mentioned they were friends w/ some dude named "Paul Rodriguez" who had a pair of "Flom" dunks available. I wasn't too familiar w/ the name or the shoes, but after further research learned Paul Rodriguez was the new face of Nike Skateboarding and that those "Floms" were probably the rarest SB dunk at the time. To make a long story short, I ended up purchasing those Floms for about $1500 and selling em for about $2300....that shoe is probably worth three times that amount now...deng it!

What's your favorite brand?
Man...i've tried to transition away from Nikes, but when it comes to style, technology, style, marketing, and style.... no one will ever do it better than Nike
What shoes do you hate?
Hmm...being in the sneaker business, I guess the politically correct answer would be....I LOVE EM ALL!!
Old skool vs New skool?
In terms of style, I'll always favor the old school sneakers. However, when it comes to comfort and technological advancements, ofcourse it would have to be the new school footwear.

Besides FOOTAGE are you involved in any other projects?
No major projects in the works currently. All my time is consumed by Family & Footage. I'm just really focused on doing whatever is necessary to make sure Footage continues to grow at the rapid pace it has during these first nine months.
Why Orange County area for shop location?
Initially, location wasn't something I put much thought in to. I figured, if I provided customers w/ the goods they're looking for, excellent customer service, and flexibility, that they would eventually come regardless where the store was located. I did however like the fact that there was no shops like Footage within ATLEAST a 20-30 mile radius. A lot of people that stop by refer to the shop as a sneaker pawn shop...haha
Why has FOOTAGE been successful?
Man...the shop's success has truly been a blessing. I honestly couldn't have asked for more than what I've been given over these first nine months. I just really try my best to make sure customers feel important and respected. Whether they're there to complete a $10 transaction or a $1000 transaction, everyone should be treated as equals. As cliche and as simple as it sounds, that strategy has worked very well for me and goes a very long way.
What future plans do you have for FOOTAGE?
Well, since the shop opened in November, the inventory has almost QUADRUPLED! So with the lack of space in the shop, customers are now required to make appointments prior to stopping by. It really works out best for everybody. I guess the next move will probably be to open up a larger shop. I haven't looked in to where or when exactly, but I'll definitely give everyone a heads up when something becomes more imminent.
Would you say owning and running a sneaker shop is hard work?
EXTREMELY HARD WORK Frank! Especially since I handle virtually everything on my own. I won't even go in to detail what a typical day for me is like, but I believe the success of the shop is heavily dependant on how hard I'm willing to work. People don't really see the hours of work involved BEFORE the shop opens and AFTER it closes. However, I'm truly blessed to have my hobby as my job....all we can really ask for is to be doing something we enjoy right? Seeing the shop's growth makes me feel like the 15 hours a day, 6 days a week sacrifices are all paying off.

Would you consider opening up a second FOOTAGE?
Sure, it's something I've thought (dreamed) of, but that's still a long long long way. I'm still working hard at making sure this first shop continues to grow. It's more likely I'll be moving the current shop to a bigger location, before even considering opening a second shop. Besides, right now I work about 15 hours a day....if we opened another shop, would that require me to work 30 hours a day???
What advise can you give to those thinking about opening up a sneaker shop?
Well, my advise doesn't only pertain to someone interested in opening a sneaker shop, but also to anyone who has goals in mind. I guess just work harder than anyone else to accomplish whatever it is you set out to do. Don't get distracted by people or things that will prohibit you from reaching your goals. Nothing comes easy and without sacrifice.
Last thoughts and shout outs?
First shout out goes to you Frank! Thanks for taking the time and thanks for spreading the word. Secondly, thanks so much to everyone that's checked out the shop. I don't take any of you for granted and I'm SO THANKFUL people have given the shop a chance. I've made a lot of new friends since the shop opened. Lastly, thanks to those in the forums who say nice things about me and the shop. I APPRECIATE ALL OF IT!!
